Maren Tolleson

Real estate lawyer, Tolleson Law Office

A lawyer who reads the whole file, then tells you what it says in plain words.

Maren grew up in Anchorage, in a house her parents bought twice: once from the builder, and again, years later, after a title problem nobody had caught. She spent her first years in practice at a title company downtown, reading exceptions and clearing them before closing.

She opened her own office to do that work for the people buying and selling, not for the lender. She takes a small number of files at a time, answers her own phone and keeps her calendar open for the week before each closing.

Outside the office she skis the Hillside trails, and she's slowly restoring a cabin she reaches by snowmachine.

How a file moves through this office

You send what you have, and I read it before we talk. On the first call I tell you what I see, what it would cost to handle, and whether you need me at all. Sometimes the answer is that your agent and the title company have it covered.

If we go ahead, you get an engagement letter with the fee in it. From then on, every document I send comes with a short note: what it is, what it means for you, and where to sign. The week before closing, I'm at my desk for your questions.
